What Is PVC Sheet?

PVC sheet is polyvinyl chloride made into flat material for construction, display, industrial equipment, machine protection and everyday surface applications.

Its properties depend on formulation. Rigid PVC-U contains little or no plasticizer and has a hard, stable structure suited to tanks, ducts, panels and machined parts. Transparent rigid PVC combines a firm structure with visibility for guards, covers and level observation. Flexible transparent PVC contains plasticizer, allowing it to bend and drape over tables, work surfaces or openings.

PVC sheet is generally moisture resistant and easy to clean. Depending on the grade, it can be cut, drilled, printed, routed, thermoformed, bent, bonded or welded. Chemical resistance, flame behavior, outdoor weathering, food contact and electrical performance must be confirmed for the exact ordered grade rather than assumed from the material name alone.

PVC Sheet Custom Service

Start by identifying the finished use. Industrial tanks and machined parts normally need rigid PVC-U; transparent guards need a rigid clear grade; table covers and flexible partitions need soft transparent PVC. Using the correct product name prevents errors in density, thickness, hardness and processing.

For cut or machined parts, send a drawing showing thickness, overall size, holes, slots, edge details and tolerances. For printed, laminated or decorative panels, provide the surface sample, color reference and indoor or outdoor requirement. For tanks or ducts, include chemical concentration, service temperature and the welding or bonding method.

Food contact, potable-water contact, flame classification, antistatic behavior, ultraviolet stability and electrical performance are grade-specific. State the required standard and document before quotation; these properties should not be assumed for every PVC sheet.

Chemical and Industrial Equipment

What is the difference between rigid PVC-U, transparent rigid PVC and flexible transparent PVC?

Is rigid PVC sheet chemical resistant?

Is every rigid PVC sheet UL 94 V-0?

No. One referenced industrial grade states UL 94 V-0, but flame classification depends on formulation, thickness and test conditions. Request grade-specific test documentation when a fire classification is mandatory.

Can rigid PVC sheet be cut, bent, welded or bonded?

Yes. Depending on grade and thickness, PVC sheet can be saw cut, CNC routed, drilled, punched, engraved, heat bent, welded and bonded with a suitable PVC adhesive. New forming or joining conditions should be checked with a trial piece.

Can PVC sheet be used for food or potable-water contact?

Only when the exact grade has the required approval. A standard industrial chemical-equipment sheet should not be assumed suitable for food, pharmaceutical or potable-water contact without the relevant documentation.

How should PVC sheet quality be checked?

Check the approved PVC type, grade, thickness, dimensions, color, transparency where applicable, flatness and surface. Examine the sheet for obvious bubbles, cracks, inclusions, damage and unacceptable color difference. Processed parts should also be checked against the drawing and tolerance.
